Below is a comprehensive list of all job descriptions for our summer employment positions at Camp Wasaga Family Camp located on Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park.
Each position is offered on a 6-week contract for approximately 40 hours per week. Room and board for the contract term is included.
Candidates may be offered additional employment before and after the Family Camp season for private group rentals and other events.
Camp Director
The Camp Director is responsible for overseeing organization and implementation of the entire program at Camp Wasaga. The Camp Director will assure camp safety, oversee summer staff, maintain good relations with the campers and administer the daily operations of the camp. They must be a responsible, friendly, organized and approachable individual. The Camp Director is able to manage conflicts and to discipline fairly. They will organize and facilitate training week with the help of the program director. They will conduct end of season evaluations for the senior staff members.

Head Cook
Camp Wasaga is a family camp, serving 3 full meals everyday and providing a snack in the evening for upwards of 100 people per day. Meals are cooked from scratch and can accommodate all ages, tastes and most dietary concerns. Balanced wholesome meals are prepared in a full camp kitchen and served buffet style at each meal.
The Head Cook is in charge of the daily kitchen operations; including assisting and directing, where necessary, the Cook and Assistant cook. The Head Cook is responsible for ensuring the campers, staff and volunteers are fed in a healthy, sanitary and timely manner. The Head Cook is considerate of the special dietary needs of some campers and adjusts the menus accordingly. The Head Cook’s duties included cooking and prepping, cleaning, proper dish washing, receiving and organizing orders and serving food, all while practicing proper food storage and handling. The Head Cook is in charge of menu planning, keeping inventory and ensuring proper stock of supplies. They also direct any volunteers in the kitchen and assist in running the camp counselors’ canteen.

Assistant Cook

Working alongside the Cook, the Assistant Cook is responsible for cooking and prepping, cleaning, proper dish washing, receiving and organizing orders, serving food as well as proper food storage and handling.

General kitchen knowledge, including knife skills, sanitation and food handling rules.

Cook

Working alongside the Head Cook and Assistant Cook, the Cook is in charge of the daily kitchen operations for his/her shift and ensuring the campers, staff and volunteers are fed in a healthy, sanitary and timely manner. The Cook is responsible for cooking and prepping, proper cleaning and dishwashing, receiving and organizing orders and serving guests as while practicing safe food handling and cleanliness. The Cook may assist the Head Cook in directing any kitchen volunteers.

Adult Program Leader
The Adult Program Leader is responsible for leading and planning nature based activities (hikes, crafts, etc.) for adults and families outside of the children’s programming. Activities typically occur in the mornings between breakfast and lunch but may be early morning or late nights. The ideal candidate would be personable, energetic and able to tailor their programs to the needs of the campers.

Hiking/camping experience recommended
Knowledge of plants, nature and wildlife essential
Program Leader
The Program Director is in charge of overseeing all program staff (Senior Leaders and Junior Leaders) as well as consulting/coordinating with other members of the Senior Staff (Camp Naturalist, Waterfront Director Etc.). The Program Director will develop fun and interesting family programs and ensure that children’s programs incorporate the natural environment, creativity, educational and active elements. They must be a responsible, friendly, organized and approachable individual. The Program Director is able to discipline fairly and manage conflicts, reporting to the Camp Director if necessary.

Activity programming experience required
L.I.T. (Leader in Training) Program Leader
The Leader in Training (L.I.T.) Director is responsible for running advanced leadership programs for campers aged 14 and 15 separate to other camp programs. Programming should include nature-focused skills development and activity planning, covering topics such as canoeing, kayaking, hiking & orienteering, leadership theory and overnight camping trips as well any other leadership skills the instructor has expertise in (ex. plant identification, First Aid etc.).
The L.I.T. Director will develop a program plan and schedule for the L.I.T. 1 (age 14) and L.I.T. 2 (age 15) sessions and review this with the Camp Director. L.I.T. Director must be able to liaise with Program Director, Waterfront Director, Camp Director, and other camp staff as required. They will work with L.I.T. participants to set goals and meet regularly to assist in monitoring progress and reinforce expectations as well as perform evaluations of L.I.T. participants and provide feedback in support of L.I.T. development. The successful candidate would be mature and reliable, and able to work with minimal supervision.

Waterfront Program Leader
The Waterfront Director is responsible for instructing campers on proper use of equipment and boating skills as well as leading youth and adults in canoeing and kayaking outings. They will lifeguard swim time in the afternoons and be responsible for maintenance and care of the boat sheds and other equipment. The Waterfront Director may also serve as the camp’s medic in times when First Aid skills are needed.

Senior Leader
Senior Leaders are responsible for programming and leading activities for children of various ages. They must also be available to help develop and deliver family activities. Senior Leaders lead overnight camping trips off-site and may develop more advanced programs for older campers. The Senior Leader is a role model and mentor for the Assistant Leaders and helps other staff members when needed.

Assistant Leader
Assistant Leaders are responsible for programming and running activities for children of various ages during morning programming. They must also be available for and help create afternoon and evening activities. Creativity, positive attitude and willingness to work in a team desired.

Head of Maintenance
The Head of Maintenance is responsible for all internal and external site maintenance including: lawn maintenance, maintenance and cleaning of wash house and minor repairs. The Head of Maintenance will also oversee health and safety checks and direct any additional maintenance personnel (ex. plumbers, volunteers etc.). The Head of Maintenance Candidate must be hardworking, personable and able to connect with adult campers and their families.

ASSISTANT Maintenance
